Title:
SELECTIVE CONVERSION OF METHANE INTO METHANOL AND CHLOROMETHANE AT ORDINARY TEMPERATURE
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS62297483
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
PURPOSE:To selectively convert methane into methanol and chloromethane at ordinary temp. and pressure by subjecting the methane to pulse electrolysis in the presence of a photocatalyst. CONSTITUTION:Since methane generated as natural gas is chemically inert, it is difficult to use the methane as starting material for the chemical industry. The methane is subjected to pulse electrolysis in a soln. contg. chloride ions such as KCl and the soln. is irradiated with light to generate chlorine radicals and to convert the methane into methanol and chloromethane through methyl radicals. Thus, the methane can be directly utilized as starting material for the chemical industry.
