Abstract:
A mechanism for use in a brake or clutch for moving plate members 11, 12 in opposite directions to engage friction discs comprises one or as shown two screws 23, 24 movable by the rotation of a body member 30 threadedly engaging the screw(s). The body member 30 includes a ratchet member 32 engaged by a pawl 100 attached to an actuator ram 61: the actuator may be applied by fluid (air, steam) as in Fig. 5 or applied by (a) spring(s) and released by fluid (Fig. 7 not shown). Force multiplication is obtained between ram 61 and plate members. A detent pawl 110 also engages ratchet member 32, the pawl 110 sliding on a pin 114 along a slot 115 and being operable to engage a following tooth on ratchet member 32 for wear adjustment. A release rod 125 may be depressed to release pawls 100, 110 to cause rewinding of ratchet member 32 under the action of springs 105, 106. The screws 23. 24 are attached to pressure plates 20 for pads 16 (see Fig. 2).
