Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for the selective oxidation of an oxidizable compound by using ferromagnetic chromium dioxide as an oxidizing agent, capable of selectively oxidizing the compound, especially an organic compound, under a mild condition and magnetically removing the oxidizing agent from the reaction mixture to efficiently obtain the reaction product.
SOLUTION: This process for the selective oxidation of an oxidizable compound comprises mixing ferromagnetic chromium dioxide with a compound to be oxidized (preferably an active alcohol, a polycyclic aromatic compound, a leuco dye, or the like), reacting the mixture to produce a reduced chromium compound adhered to the unreacted chromium dioxide and the oxidation product, and subsequently magnetically separating the chromium dioxide having the reduced chromium compound adhered thereto from the oxidation product. A magnet is preferably disposed on the outside of a reactor to accelerate the recovery of the chromium-containing product. The separated reduced chromium compound adhered thereto is preferably regenerated in air at a high temperature of 200-400°C.
