Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correct mode asymmetry of spot size conversion in the case of using a semi-insulating substrate and to improve connection characteristics with a fiber.
SOLUTION: In this semiconductor optical function element for which the semi-insulating substrate (substrate 1), a first clad layer (multiple clad layer 2) provided with a first conductive type, an active layer whose refractive index is larger than the one of the multiple clad layer 2, a second clad layer 6 of the refractive index smaller than the one of the active layer provided with a second conductivity type, and a contact layer 7 provided with the second conductivity type, are successively laminated, the multiple clad layer 2 forms a multi-layer structure and the multi-layer structure is constituted by laminating the layers of the different refractive indexes so as to be adjacent to each other. Further, the average of the refractive indexes of the multiple clad layer 2 is equal to or more than the refractive index of the substrate 1.
