Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a plate type polarization separating device having a repeating structure in which polarization separating film planes and reflecting film planes are alternately arranged with a fine pitch, and to obtain a projection-type display device, using this polarization separating device.
SOLUTION: In a production process of a polarization separating device, first a sheet glass having a polarization separation film 2 consisting of a multilayered film of inorg. substances on the surface, and a sheet glass having a reflection plane on the surface are alternately laminated to form a glass block 19. Then the glass block 19 is cut along the cutting plane oblique with respect to the laminated faces. A projection which can be used for positioning of the polarization separating device may be formed on at least one side face of the planar block thus produced by cutting. By adhering a half-λ phase difference plate to a part of the light-emitting face of the polarization separating device, the obtd. polarization separating device converts the light from a light source to emit a light beam, having the polarization direction of either the s-polarized light or p-polarized light. The polarization separating device obtd. can be put to use in a projection type display device.
