Title:
SEPARATION OF AMMONIUM SULFATE AND AMMONIUM BISULFATE AND PRODUCTION OF 2-HYDROXY-4-METHYLTHIOBUTANOIC ACID USING THE SAME
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3804210
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the amount of sulfuric acid which is a raw material to be used and simultaneously remarkably reduce the amount of generated wastewater in the production of 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutanoic acid.
SOLUTION: When 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutyronitrile is hydrated and hydrolyzed with sulfuric acid to produce 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutanoic acid. In the process, methanol is added to a solution after hydrolysis treatment containing ammonium sulfate and ammonium bisulfate after separating the 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutanoic acid to separate the ammonium sulfate and the methanol is further removed to afford an aqueous solution of the ammonium bisulfate, which is then circulated through a hydrating and hydrolyzing step and used together with the sulfuric acid.
