To efficiently separate chloromethane and dimethyl ether each useful as e.g. a chemical raw material in high purity by feeding an extractive distillation column with a dimethyl ether/cchloromethane mixture followed by treating the mixture under specified conditions.
This separation process is conducted as follows: (i) an extractive distillation column 3 is fed with a dimethyl ether/chloromethane mixture 1, (ii) an organic: solvent such as hexane or methanol, an aqueous salt solution such as of triethylamine, or water, as extractant, is added to the overhead of the distillation column 3, (iii) chloromethane vapor is drawn at the overhead, (iv) a mixture of the dimethyl ether and the extractant is drawn at the bottom of the distillation column 3, (v) the mixture drawn is fed to a distillation column 18, (vi) dimethyl ether vapor is drawn at the overhead of the distillation column 18, (vii) the pure extractant is drawn at the bottom of the distillation column 18 and then fed to the extracttive distillation column 3 again, thus separating the chloromethane and the dimethyl ether.
