PURPOSE: To cost effectively obtain high-purity ETBE by subjecting a mixture composed of ethyl ternary butyl ether(ETBE) and ethanol to two continuous distillations under different pressures.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture composed of the ETBE and the ethanol is fed through a pipeline 1 to a first distillation column CD1 operating under a pressure (P1) of 2.5 to 15 bar at a bottom temp. of 78 to 180°C and top tap. of 67 to 160°C. The refined ETBE is recovered through a pipeline 2. The ETBE-ethanol mixture having a compsn. approximate to the azeotropic compsn. of the pressure P1 at the top of the column is withdrawn through a pipeline 3. The distillate is reduced down to a pressure (P2) lower by 2 to 10 bar than the pressure P1 by a pressure-reducing valve D1 and is introduced into the upper part of a second distillation column CD2 operating under the pressure P2 at a bottom temp. of 60 to 150°C and top temp. of 50 to 130°C. The refined ethanol is recovered through a conduit 6 and the distillate from a pipeline 5 is condensed in a heat exchanger E1 and is recovered into a tank B1. Part thereof is sent to the top of the second column CD2 and the balance is recirculted to the first column CD1.
