PURPOSE: To purify the titled substance useful as a raw material for heat- resistant polyesters, etc., by removing unreacted phenol from a crude product obtained from fluorenone and phenol, dissolving and depositing the titled substance.
CONSTITUTION: Fluorenone is reacted with phenol in the presence of a catalyst to give a crude product containing the titled aimed substance. The unreacted phenol is first removed by a means, e.g. vacuum evaporation, etc., and the residual reaction products are dissolved in diethyl ether, acetone, ethanol, propanol, dioxane or acetic acid alone or a mixture thereof as a solvent. Thereby the aimed substance is once dissolved to form as adduct with the solvent, which is then crystallized and deposited. The resultant adduct is then separated and heated at 30W80°C under reduced pressure to remove the solvent. The residue is further recrystallized with toluene, etc. to provide the aimed substance of high purity.
