To provide a servo press apparatus hardly causing the risk of dropping a workpiece during conveying, capable of preventing a mechanical interference between a die and a conveying apparatus, and capable of easily performing a return operation without damaging the workpiece, and to provide a method for controlling the servo press apparatus.

The servo press apparatus comprises: a press apparatus 10 driving a slide by a servomotor, and capable of controlling the position at a real time; a conveying apparatus 20 conveying in-out a workpiece to the press apparatus; and a controller 40 detecting the position on the operating locus of the conveying apparatus, and controlling the press apparatus in such a manner that it does not mechanically interfere with the conveying apparatus. The controller 40 comprises a slide position calculating means 41 calculating the positional range of the slide in which a fitted die 104 and the slide do not mechanically interfere with the conveying apparatus. By the slide position calculating means, the objective range of the slide in which it does not mechanically interfere is calculated, and the press apparatus is controlled in such a manner that the actual position of the slide enters the objective range.
