NEW MATERIAL:The sesquiterpene compounds of formula I and formula II.
USE: Synthetic intermediate of an antifeedant for army worm. Useful for the total synthesis of cinnamodial hitherto extracted from warburigia or cinnamosma which are vegetables grown in Africa.
PROCESS: The compound of formula I is prepared by treating the compound of formula III with an alkali. The treatment is pref. carried out in dioxane as a solvent, using NaOH as the alkali, at room temperature. The produced compound of formula I is made to react with an oxidizing agent under basic or neutral conditions to afford the compound of formula II. The oxidizing agent is pref. DMSO reagent (trifluoroacetic acid, dicyclohexyl carbodiimide). The reaction proceeds at room temperature.
