Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately estimate the distance between vehicles, even if a radar cannot detect the distance to the vehicle in front in the vehicle having the radar and a camera.
SOLUTION: Reference edge image information y(i), consisting of the coordinates of the inside of a reference edge image and the size, is selected from among the reference edge image of the vehicle in front that is detected by the image of a CCD camera 5; the correlation between the reference edge image coordinates y(i) and distance X(k) between the vehicles detected by the laser radar 7 is obtained; and coefficient A1 and B1 obtained by smoothing the correlation coefficients (a) and (b) are used; and an estimation value Y(k) of the distance between the vehicles is calculated, based on the reference edge image information y(i), that is obtained even after the laser radar 7 is lost. The distance X(k) between the vehicles is detected by the laser radar 7, a distribution ratio f(p), regarding a pitch angle (p) is set, while the estimation value Y(k) of the distance between the vehicles is being estimated from the image of the CCD camera 5; and the distribution ratio of the estimation value Y(k) of the distance between the vehicles is increased as the pitch angle (p) is larger.
