PURPOSE: To set a spiral wound gasket to a heat exchange device in an easy manner, by winding a seal member around a heat exchanging part on a base plate where the heat exchanging part is projectingly installed.
CONSTITUTION: In the case where a spiral wound gasket is set to a U-tube heat exchanger, a tube bundle 18 being solidly unified with a tube plate 16 is pulled out of a body 22 as far as necessary to set the gasket to the heat exchanger. A reel supporting block 62 is traveled along a rail 50 round clockwise, winding a hoop material several times around the peripheral surface of an inner ring 30, then a feeler material is fed from a feeler material reel 64, traveling the reel supporting block as simultaneously feeding both the feeler material and the hoop material, and a spiral part 34 is thus formed up. After completing the spiral part by having inset both the spiral part 34 removed out of an inner ring locking device 40 and the inner ring into a ringlike-formed outer ring 32, the spiral wound gasket is set to the heat exchanger.
