To reduce load on a worker for error confirming work to facilitate restoration work by inhibiting sewing motion of a sewing machine and generating an alarm to inform of an error when a needle thread cutter is in a motion position at a timing not prescribed for the motion position based on output of a cutter position detecting means.
This buttonhole sewing machine 1 is equipped with a needle 9 to make lifting up/down motion and right/left swing motion, cloth presser 15 to press cloth, a cloth holding plate 14 to move forward/backward in the cloth feeding direction, and a cloth cutting knife 16 to cut cloth to form a buttonhole. The machine is also equipped with a needle thread cutter to move from a stand-by position a far from the needle location up to a motion position in the vicinity of the needle location to cut the needle thread. A detecting switch to detect that the needle thread cutter is at the motion position is also equipped. Based on detection output thereof, sewing motion of the sewing machine is inhibited when the needle thread cutter is at the motion position in a timing prescribed not to be at the position and an error indication on the needle thread cutter is displayed.
