A thread cutting mechanism in a sewing machine includes: a thread cutting cam plate 41 fixed to a sewing machine main shaft 10 and set to move a movable blade; a drive lever 42 having a roller member engageable with the thread cutting cam plate, and being movable between an engagement position and a retreat position; a thread cutter link mechanism 39 for driving the movable blade by transmitting, to the movable blade, swing movement of the drive lever generated when a roller member is displaced at the engagement position by the thread cutting cam plate; a swing force generating mechanism 38 for moving the drive lever to space between the engagement position and the retreat position; and a sewing machine motor 27 for driving the sewing machine main shaft. The swing force generating mechanism and a drive mechanism 68 are driven by a drive pulse motor, and the drive pulse motor, the drive mechanism, and the swing force generating mechanism are arranged in a column of the sewing machine.
