To provide a shaft-type linear motor which is provided with a rod- shaped stator having a field magnet and with a moving element having an armature coil, in which the interval between center positions of respective coils constituting the armature coil can be set precisely at a prescribed interval, in which a change in a thrust is small, which can be driven with good efficiency, and in which the width of the moving element is small, and to provide its driving method.
A linear motor is composed of a moving element 2 comprising an armature coil 21 composed of coils LU, LV, LW and of a stator 1 comprising a field magnet 11 in which N-poles and S-poles in a magnetic pole width P are arranged alternately. The width PC of the respective coils is made smaller than Pm/3, spacers in a width of PSP=Pm/3-Pc are installed between the coils, and center positions of the respective coils are displaced by Pm/3 each. A constant current in a direction in which an electromagnetic force is generated in a driving direction is made to flow to the respective coils from positions, in which their center positions are advanced to a Pm/6 driving direction from the upstream side in the driving direction of every magnetic pole up to positions in which they are advanced to a 2Pm/3 driving direction.
