Title:
SHAPE MEMORY ALLOY RELAY AND SWITCH
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH0757598
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide a relay which has high reliability, quickly operates, and is manufactured at low production cost by heating a thin and long member made of a shape memory alloy in a manner that the member can selectively be brought into contact with an electric contact part and be parted from the contact part. CONSTITUTION: By heating one side part 52 of a shape memory alloy wire 34 by operation of a light emitting diode 26, the wire 34 is rotated around the axial line in the longitudinal direction as to restore a memorized shape and a switch 10 is turned on. Both ends 36, 38 of the wire 34 fixed in the side face parts 30, 32 of an intermediate plate 14 are not rotated. On the other hand, the heated part 52 starts loosening and rotates in the first direction is shown by an arrow 56. The other side part 54 also rotates in the direction as shown by the arrow 56 and since both ends 36, 38 to the wire are fixed, the wire is further twisted. Since the wire is rotated, a movable piece 44 is also rotated in the direction 56, so that the movable piece 44 is brought into contact with contact parts 18, 20 in the case sufficient heat is applied to the wire and an electric circuit between conductors 19, 20 can be closed.
