PURPOSE: To use the back face of a shaving cutter after the remounting thereof upon maturity of cutter surface service life and improve the service life of the cutter by carrying out a shaving process in such a way that a gear to be shaved is engaged with the cutter, with the centers of the cutter and the gear dislocated from each other.

CONSTITUTION: A gear 11 to be shaved and a shaving cutter 12 are engaged with each other, while a gear axis 13 and a cutter axis 14 are intersecting each other and the center Q of the gear 11 is dislocated from the center R of the cutter 12. A shaving process is carried out in this condition, thereby enabling the use of a back face 16 through the remounting of the cutter 12 when the surface 15 thereof has come to the end of service life. Also, even without remounting the cutter 12, a spacer width for a cutter width on the shaving machine is changed, thereby dislocating the center R of the cutter 12 from the center Q of the gear 11. As a result, the surface 15 can still be used and the service life of the cutter 12 is extended.
