A sheet carrying device according to the invention has a first and a second carrying path branching at a branch part, with the second carrying path being arranged movably in the sheet carrying direction, and is equipped with a sheet retention means for retaining each sheet of paper temporarily in such a manner that its leading edge is abutting thereto, wherein the retaining means is composed of an abutting means to hold the sheet abutting and a driving device to move the abutting member in the sheet carrying direction.
