A sheet conveying device includes a shift unit 20 having gate members 14 for forming a loop by causing the leading end of a conveyed recording medium to be brought into contact and locked, a registration roller pair 12 composed of a drive roller 12A and a driven roller 12B for conveying the recording medium at the predetermined timing, the drive roller 12A having a rotational axis 12a coaxial with a rotational center axis of the gate member 14, and a drive transmission part (the first gear 19) for transmitting rotational drive to the drive roller 12A from a drive means. The sheet conveying device is provided with a shift control means for holding the shift unit in a manner to be movable in a direction perpendicular to the recording medium conveying direction, and a rotation control means for holding the shift unit in a manner to be rotatable toward the recording medium conveying direction with the drive transmission part being a rotational center.
