To provide a sheet conveying device capable of eliminating double feeding while minimizing reduction in productivity.
In this sheet conveying device, a pair of first conveying rollers 42a are reversely rotated to convey a sheet P detected at a double sheet feeding detection position P1 at an estimated time when a preceding sheet Pa is passed in a reverse direction to a sheet conveying direction. If a distance between the double sheet feeding detection position P1 and a rear end position of the preceding sheet Pa is more than a predetermined distance, the normal rotation of the conveying rollers is immediately restarted. And while, if the distance between the double sheet feeding detection position P1 and the rear end position of the preceding sheet Pa is less than the predetermined distance, the rotation is stopped until the distance between the double sheet feeding detection position P1 and the rear end position of the preceding sheet Pa reaches the predetermined distance and the normal rotation is restarted after the distance between the double sheet feeding detection position P1 and the rear end position of the preceding sheet Pa has reached the predetermined distance.
