The amount of documents being conveyed is calculated when an encoder Sn2 as a rear-end detector detects a rear end of the document. The encoder Sn2 adds the calculated amount of documents to a "total amount of documents conveyed" only when rotation of a detection roller 301 as an accompanying member is stopped. After the "total amount of document conveyed" is equal to or more than a "separation completion threshold" or a separation sensor Sn1 detects a rear end of the document being conveyed, conveyance of a subsequent document is started, if any.
