To provide a sheet material supply device which excellently feeds a sheet material even when a tip-irregular sheet bundle is set, by returning the doubly-fed sheet material without imparting rotational driving in the direction for returning the sheet material to a separation roller, even when the sheet material is doubly fed.
This sheet material supply device includes a torque limiter for generating an idly rotating load in the separation roller for separating the sheet material by co-rotation via a predetermined idly rotating load while abutting on a feeding roller, and a return spring for imparting torque in the return direction of a separation roller rotary body. When starting to feed the sheet material, torsional deflection is imparted to the return spring, and when the sheet material is doubly fed, the torque by the torsional deflection by the return spring is made to act, and the doubly-fed sheet material is returned by reversely rotating a return roller rotary body.
