PURPOSE: To facilitate a paper removal operation by stopping the feed of paper before the paper is completely inserted into a feed path.

CONSTITUTION: A first sensor 27 is disposed on the upstream of a manual insertion paper supply roller 6 in a paper feed direction. A second sensor 29 is disposed on the downstream of an upstream paper feed roller 11a disposed on the downstream of the manual insertion paper supply roller 6. When the trailing end of paper is detected by the first sensor 27 but the leading end of the paper is not detected by the second sensor 29 (S3: NO, S9: NO), the rotation of the manual insertion paper supply roller 6 is brought to a stop (S10), or the roller 6 is reversely rotated (S11).
