A sheet processing apparatus includes a pair of first and second tooth-shaped members 261a, 261b having projections and recesses on their surfaces, and a squeeze press fit mechanism 269 for pressing a sheet bundle inserted between the first and second tooth-shaped members 261a, 261b in a direction of a thickness of the sheet bundle to fit with each other and squeezing them to bind. A pressing force applying means includes a link mechanism 270 and a crank mechanism 271 to operate the link mechanism 270. A pressing force generated between the first and second tooth-shaped members 261a, 261b increases in strength as a relative distance between the first and second tooth-shaped members 261a, 261b decreases by operating the link mechanism 270 by the crank mechanism 271.
