To improve the yield of products by suppressing variation in sheet thickness caused by an excessive tension between a rolling mill and a coiler.
In the sheet thickness control method for rolling mill equipment, in which a metal sheet is wound by the coiler 2 while rolling the sheet by the rolling mill provided with the sheet thickness control device 4, the variation of the thickness caused by the excessive tension when starting winding is preliminarily measured and stored. As for a compensation section being a sheet-length section equivalent to the period of time from just before stating of winding till the excessive tension is eliminated, the compensation of the thickness for reducing the variation in the sheet thickness is calculated on the basis of the stored value. In the gage control device 4, the rolling mill 1 is controlled so that the target thickness is changed from the thickness of the products before the compensation section to the thickness after compensation added with the thickness compensation in the compensation section, and is changed to the gage of the products again after the compensation section.
