To provide a shield type tunnel excavator in which, when switching from a belt conveyer to a screw conveyer, switching can be performed in a short time and even in the case of urgent flooding, water can be cut off speedily.
A shield type tunnel excavator 10 comprises: a cutter head 12; a drive unit 14 which supports and drives the cutter head 12; an excavation stress support unit 16 which secures an excavation stress to the drive unit 14; a propulsion unit 18 which gives propulsion power to the drive unit 14; and a trunk unit 20 including at least a front trunk part 32 and a rear trunk part 36 covering the drive unit 14, the excavation stress support unit 16 and the propulsion unit 18 at the back of the cutter head 12. In the shield type tunnel excavator 10, a gate plate 60 capable of cut-off is mounted in an opening 58 formed on a partition wall 48 positioned between a side of a chamber 26 of the cutter head 12 and the trunk unit 20 and a belt conveyer 46 for excavation sand conveyance can be inserted into the chamber or a screw conveyer can be mounted at the gate plate position.
