PURPOSE: To shorten a shifting time and lessen a shifting shock by quickly changing a gear and smoothly changing torque as appearing on an output shaft, when a shifting process develops sufficiently after the fitting of a frictional engagement device at the engagement side.
CONSTITUTION: When the prescribed gear change is implemented, the first frictional engagement device 1 is disengaged and the second frictional engagement device 2 is engaged. In this case, the engagement force of the device 2 is maintained at a low level with a low pressure holding instruction means 5 until the speed of the prescribed rotating member 4 reaches the preset level, and a gear change thereby progresses quickly. Also, when the speed of the member 4 reaches the preset level, the engagement force of the device 2 is increased with an engagement instruction means 6. In addition, when the speed of the member 4 reaches another preset level, the engagement force of the device 1 is increased with a pressure rise instruction means 7, resulting in a tie-up state. Furthermore, after the elapse of the preset time, an instruction signal is outputted for a release instruction means 8 to lower the engagement force of the device 1.
