PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve fuel, noise, and vibration by setting the threshold of resistance in traveling so that the higher speed stage may be selected, as compared with the time of nonoperation, at the time of operation of an automatic constant speed travel device.
SOLUTION: An automatic constant speed traveling device controls the outlet of an engine so as to conform the actual car speed to the objective car speed. A driving force computation means computes the driving force of a vehicle, and a travel resistance computation means computes the actual resistance in traveling of a vehicle. On the other hand, a threshold setting means changes and sets the travel resistance, according to the existence of operation of the automatic fixed speed travel device, so as to switch the speed change property into the direction where higher stage is selected as compared with the time of nonoperation, at the time of operation of the automatic fixed speed travel device. And, the speed change deciding means decides the speed change stage, based on the actual travel resistance, the threshold value of travel resistance, and driving force. This way, the execution of unnecessary up shift is evaded by judging whether the required surplus driving force is secured or not, in the case where the gear is shifted to the stage higher than the present speed change stage.
