To easily process the output for determining a shift position of a transmission by a CPU, and improve accuracy of failure diagnosis.
A resistance circuit composed of a plurality of resistances R1, R2, R3, R4 connected in series is formed, and a plurality of shift position contacts 2, 3, 4 arranged on a single plane are connected at respective connecting points of these resistances. The shift position detection device is provided with a movable terminal 5 which slidably moves in the arrangement direction on the shift position contact in conjunction with the operation of a shift lever. The detection device is provided with a DC power source 9 applying voltage on both ends of the resistance circuit. The CPU 6 has a port wherein an A/D conversion value of resistance voltage division of the power supply voltage detected through the movable terminal 5. The CPU 6 compares the theoretical value of the resistance voltage division corresponding to the shift position with the input voltage of the port , detects the shift position, and outputs a detection signal for displaying the detection result or the like.
