Title:
SHOCK ABSORBER FOR STEERING COLUMN
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH1086829
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

To improve energy absorption against an impact force without increasing any shortened stroke in a shock absorber for a steering column.

A steering wheel 4 and a steering gear box 7 are connected together via an contractable steering column 3. A column bracket 29 installed in an upper tube 20 serving as a contractable movable part of the steering column 3 is connected to a pedal bracket 9 by means of a breakaway mechanism 30. In the upper tube 20, a contact member 39 is installed opposedly to a brake pedal arm 10. If an impact force is applied to the steering wheel 4, the column bracket 29 is released from the pedal bracket 9 and the steering column 3 is contracted, and the contact member 39 is brought into contact with the pedal brake arm 10 so as to rotate it. In addition to the contraction of the steering column 3, a greater impact energy can be absorbed by means of a reaction force of the brake pedal arm 10.
