To provide a shock absorber that allows characteristics to be set so as to change a damping force more smoothly in accordance with a vibration state.
The shock absorber includes: first passages 30a, 30b and second passages 135, 136 where a working fluid flows out from one of chambers 4, 5 when a piston 3 moves; damping force generating mechanisms 32a, 32b provided in the first passages 30a, 30b; a housing 55 including at least a part of a flow passage of the second passages 135, 136; a free piston 57 disposed movably in the housing 55; an elastic ring 58 generating elastic force with respect to the movement of the free piston 57 in one direction; and an elastic ring 59 generating elastic force with respect to the movement of the free piston 57 in the other direction. The housing 55 comprises at least two bodies of a cylinder 51 having a small diameter portion 86 in contact with the elastic ring 58, and a cylinder 52 having a small diameter portion 79 in contact with the elastic ring 59.
