The shock absorbing device for an automobile comprises a cylinder, a piston reciprocatingly/movably arranged in the cylinder, and a magnetic field forming unit mounted to either an inside surface of the cylinder or an outside surface of the piston for forming a magnetic field in the radial direction of the piston. Either the inside surface of the cylinder or the outside surface of the piston to which the magnetic field forming unit is not mounted is formed by metal material.
