To provide a short arc discharge lamp with a pair of a cathode and an anode arranged face to face in an arc tube, having an electrode structure so that an anode end central part may not be protruded over its peripheral annular part and blacking of the lamp due to evaporation of an electrode material may not be caused, especially during a full/stanby lighting in which a normal lighting at a rated power and a stanby lighting at a rated power and a stanby lighting at a power smaller than the rated power are alternately repeated.
In an opening formed at the end central part of the anode , there is inserted an inserted body other than the anode with a metal-made shock absorbing material having a smaller yield stress than the anode material interposed, and an escaping groove of the buffer material is formed at least either on an inner surface of the opening of the anode or on an outer surface of the inserted body.
