PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance having increased number of carbon atoms, by alkylating the side chain of an alkyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbon with an aliphatic monoolefin in the presence of catalyst produced by supporting an alkali metal on potassium phosphate or potassium halide.
CONSTITUTION: An alkyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbon having increased number of carbon atoms can be produced by alkylating the side chain of an alkyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbon (e.g. toluene) with an aliphatic mono olefin (e.g. propylene) in the presence of (A) a catalyst produced by supporting an alkali metal (preferably Na) on potassium phosphate or potassium halide or (B) a catalyst produced by supporting potassium phosphate or potassium halide together with an alkali metal (preferably Na) on a carrier. The carrier of the catalyst B is preferably silica magnesia or magnesia having surface basicity.
EFFECT: The objective compound can be produced in high conversion and selectively rates.
