To always accurately determine a side collision including vehicle stopping time, by preventing making an erroneous determination that a door is closed when traveling on a bad road, in a starting control device of a side collision determining device and an occupant crash protection device.
The side collision determining device includes an acceleration sensor arranged in a vehicle door and outputting a signal corresponding to acceleration added in the vehicle width direction and a polarity determining means for determining whether vehicle inward force acts or vehicle outward force acts on the vehicle door based on an integral value of the acceleration based on an output signal of the acceleration sensor, and determines that a side collision is caused in one's own vehicle when determining that the vehicle inward force acts on the vehicle door by the polarity determining means. Whether the one's own vehicle is traveling or stopped is determined, and as a result of it, when determining that the one's own vehicle is traveling, a determination that the vehicle outward force acts on the vehicle door by the polarity determining means, is made difficult more than when determining that the one's own vehicle is stopped.
