To provide a method and apparatus for estimating a likelihood value for a signal in a sequence of signals transmitted from a transmitter to a receiver via a channel.
The signal estimation method adopts a plurality of particles and each particle includes an assumed transmission signal history. One embodiment includes steps for initializing a set of the particles, developing the set of particles temporally for incurring the succession of a developed set of particles, tracking a plurality of paths via the succession of a retroactively developed set, and determining a sequence of likelihood values for the transmitted sequence of signals using the paths. The present invention is effective particularly for a communication system such as a MIMO (multi-input multi-output) system wherein a receiver receives a signal from a transmitter having a plurality of transmitter antennas.
