PURPOSE: To obtain a silicon-containing fiber having excellent heat-resistance, combustion resistance and adhesivity and superior to carbon fiber in mechanical characteristics such as strength and elastic modulus.
CONSTITUTION: This silicon-containing fiber is produced by spinning a silicon- containing polymeric compound of the formula (R1 is H, a 1-30C alkyl, an alkenyl, an alkynyl, phenyl or a naphthyl; R2 is a 1-30C alkylene, an alkenylene, an alkynylene, a phenylene or a naphthylene; the group of R2 may have substituents such as a halogen, hydroxyl, amino and carboxyl) and baking the spun fiber at 100-3000°C. The spinning can be carried out by a melt-spinning method comprising the heating and melting of a the silicon-containing compound, the extrusion of the molten compound through a nozzle into a gaseous flow and the cooling of the fiber, a dry-spinning method comprising the dissolution of the silicon-containing compound in a solvent, the extrusion of the obtained dope through a nozzle into a gaseous flow and the evaporation of the solvent or a wet-spinning method comprising the spinning of a spinning dope in a non- solvent to effect the removal of the solvent from the dope.
