Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a composite Al material reinforced with silicon nitride whiskers and provided with improved strength at high temp., by blending Al with a specified volume percentage of silicon nitride whiskers.
CONSTITUTION: Al or an Al alloy is blended with 5W50vol% silicon nitride whiskers. It is preferable that each of the whiskers has about 1W2μm diameter, about 100W300μm length and ≥ about 99% α-Si3N4 content. The blend is formed into a thin plate on a stainless steel substrate by flame spraying, and the thin plate is stripped off and used as a starting material for a whisker reinforced composite material.
