PURPOSE: To obtain a silicon polymer useful as a functional material excellent in reactivity, heat resistance, etc., by polycondensing a specified metal compound of an o-diethynylbenzene derivative with a specified silyl halide compound.
CONSTITUTION: A metal compound of an o-diethynylbenzene derivative, represented by formula II (wherein R7 to R10, which may be the same or different from each other, are each a 1-12C alkyl or aryl; M is an alkali metal or a halide of an alkaline earth metal), is polycondensed with a silyl halide compound of formula III (wherein R1 and R2 are each a 1-20C alkyl or 6-12C aryl; X is a halogen atom; Y is O, an aromatic ring group, an acetylene residue or an organometallic compound group; and (a) is an integer of 0-10). The produced silicon polymer contains at least two units represented by formula I (wherein R1 and R2 are the same as R1 and R2 in formula III; R3 to R6 are the same as R7 to R10 in formula II; and Y and (a) are the same as Y and (a) inn formula III).
