This silver halide emulsion layer contains the flat silver halide grains capable of forming the development initiating points on and near the vertices of the grains. A hydrophilic colloidal layer contains at least one of compounds represented by the formula: R1-(S)m-R2 and Het-(J)n-(Q)p in which each of R1 and R2 is an aliphatic or aromatic or heterocyclic group or each may combine with each other to form a ring; (m) is an integer of 2-6; Het is a 5- or 6-membered N-containing hetero ring having no mercapto group or no blocked mercapto group; J is a (a+1)-valent bonding group; Q is a water- soluble group; (n) is an integer of 0-5; and each of (a) and (p) is an integer of ≥1.
