To simultaneously and easily obtain the subject compounds by reaction between a 3-acyl tetrahydrofuran-2-one and a metal salt in a polyethylene glycol dialkyl ether.
The cyclopropyl alkyl ketone of formula II and 4,5- dihydroalkylfuran of formula III are simultaneously obtained by reaction between a compound of formula I (R1 is a 1-4C alkyl, cyclohexyl or phenyl; R2 is H, a 1-4C alkyl or phenyl) and a metal salt (e.g. an alkali metal halide such as NaI) in the molar ratio of the latter to the former of (1:2) to (1:10) in a polyethylene glycol dialkyl ether as a high-boiling solvent at 160-220°C. The above method is simple, being such one that the reaction can be conducted in a conventional agitator, the catalyst can be recovered easily, and high-boiling wastes are produced only slightly.
