PURPOSE: To maintain stably polarization without disturbance of polarized light even if light leaks to the outside of a core by making the coefft. of thermal expansion in the part adjacent to the core roughly equal to that of the core part.
CONSTITUTION: The region 5 of a radius (c) in the clad of an optical fiber consisting of a core 1, a clad 2 and a stress applying part 3 is so constituted as to have the coefft. of thermal expansion equal or roughly equal to that of the core. The stress distribution in the region of the radius (c) including the core part 1 is uniform and the main axis of stress is in an X-axis or Y-axis direction according to such constitution. Therefore even if the light propagating in the optical fiber leaks to the outside of the core, the light is propagated by maintaining the polarized state in the region having a diameter 2c and the maintenability of the linearly polarized light is improved.
