Abstract:
PURPOSE:To provide the title sintered body having high density even when it is a large sized molded body having large thickness by using SiC powder in combination with a specified proportion of a specified C-contg. material and a B compd. as sintering aid, mixing and molding the materials, and then sintering the molded product thereafter in a specified temp. range. CONSTITUTION:5-Dimethylphenol formaldehyde resin forming 2-7pts.wt. carbon after carbonization per 100pts.wt. SiC powder and 0.03-0.15pts.wt. (expressed in terms of B) per 100pts.wt. SiC powder or a B compd. are added as sintering aid. After molding the mixture, obtd. molded body is sintered at 1,900-2,300 deg.C in inert gas atmosphere, and a sintered body of SiC is obtd. The sintered body has a uniform distribution of density and high density. When the above described sintering temp. is <1,900 deg.C, the sintered density of the molded body is low. When it exceeds 2,300 deg.C, the density is reduced due to occurrence of evaporation of SiC or formation of coarse grains of crystal particles.
