Title:
SINTERED COMPACT USED FOR MACHINING CHEMICALLY REACTIVE MATERIAL
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP2004160637
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

To improve efficiency of a cubic boron nitride superabrasive tool.

A sintered cubic boron nitride (cBN) compact for use in a tool is composed of about 60 to 80 volume % of cBN having a volumetric average particle size of about 3 to 6 μm and about 40 to 20 volume % of a ceramic binder phase. The ceramic binder is composed of about 20 to 60 volume % of one or more of a carbide, nitride, or boride of a Group IVB or VIB metal, and about 40 to 80 volume % of one or more of carbides, nitrides, borides, or oxides of aluminum. The cBN compact additionally contains about 3 to 15 weight % of tungsten. The cBN compacts are useful in machining chemically reactive parts such as iron, and especially useful in machining powder metal parts.
