PURPOSE: To obtain an excellent sintered compact for wire drawing die tools which is a sintered compact which consists of the carbide, nitride, boride, etc., of transition metal, iron-group metal and diamond dust by sintering them in the region where graphite is thermodynamically stable.
CONSTITUTION: This sintered compact is a material mixture which consists of 20-85vol.% carbide, nitride, boride of the transition metal of either of group IV, V and VI in the periodic table or these mixture or these solid solutions, 2-10vol.% iron-group metal and 10-50vol.% diamond dust having the grain size of 1-10μm. The sintered compact having Young's modulus of 60000-80000kg/mm2 is made by sintering this material mixture at 950-1150°C and under a pressure of 1-30kb. In this way, when the material mixture is sintered at the temp. and pressure where graphite is thermodynamically stable, the phase transition of a part of the diamond is generated, resultant fine carbon is precipitated in the iron-group metal or on its surface and the toughness and strength of a binder phase are raised, increased.
