To find out a material affording better sliding characteristics and lower friction characteristics than those of conventional members made of steel as a sliding opponent member in the presence of a lubricant for members having a rigid carbon film formed thereon and to provide a sliding member exhibiting a lower coefficient of friction and better fuel consumption saving effects than those of the conventional members.
The sliding member is obtained by forming the rigid carbon film in a part or all of one sliding surface of the sliding member having the relatively slidable sliding surfaces in the presence of the lubricant such as an engine oil and, on the other hand, composing the part or all of the sliding surface of the opponent side of metal molybdenum. Thereby, the coefficient of friction between both sliding surfaces can remarkably be reduced to exhibit better fuel consumption saving effects than those of the conventional combination of the rigid carbon film with the members made of steel.
