PURPOSE: To simplify operation of a converter and to improve durability of a device by providing an additional refractory shut-off plate between a bottom plate and a sliding plate so as to enable hermetically sealing in a sliding shut-off device having the refractory bottom plate and the refractory sliding plate for opening and closing a spout of a converter vessel.
CONSTITUTION: The sliding shut-off device 20 has the refractory bottom plate 22 and the refractory sliding plate 24 for opening and closing the spout 15 of the converter vessel. In the device 20, the additional refractory shut-off plate 23 is provided between the bottom plate 22 and the sliding plate 24 to hermetically seal the spout 15. The shut-off plate 23 is stationarily attached to the bottom plate 22 or is made movable together with the sliding plate 24. As a whole, durability of these sliding plates is a match for durability of a refractory sleeve 16 used for the spout 15. At the time of operatingonly the sliding plate 24 moves at first and the shut-off plate 23 is held immovable on the other hand. Then a procedure in which, when the sliding plate 24 is worn, the shut-off plate 23 thereabove is moved together with the sliding plate 24 is repeated to improve durability of the device 20.
