PURPOSE:To secure an excellent braking characteristic irrespective of weather or the like as well as to curtail the material cost, by using granular pulverized slags as granular matter preventing the slipping and skidding of a locomotive upon being scattered between a rail and a wheel tread. CONSTITUTION:Granular matter 1 in a sand box 2 installed in a locomotive 9 passes through the inside of a sand scattering pipe 3 and is scattered between a tread 19 of a wheel 4 of the locomotive and a rail 5 by dint of compressed air. And, the scattered granular matter 1 is treaded down by the wheel 4 whereby mutual frictional force between the wheel 4 and the rail 5 is increased. In consequence, the slipping and skidding of the wheel 4 are prevented from occurring, thus tractive force and braking force of the locomotive 9 are all improved. In this case, a pulverized slag is used as the granular matter 1. And, as for the pulverized slag, those made in a blast furnace and a converter are used. According to these slags, an excellent braking characteristic is securable irrespective of weather conditions, while the material cost is sharply reducible as compared with natural sand.
