To avoid the expansion of a communication port by preventing the residual deposit of mud, gravel or the like in an air chamber at low cost, in a slurry shield machine equipped with the air chamber for absorbing a variation in the pressure of slurry water of a working face.
The slurry shield machine 1 is formed of a cutter chamber 7 defined between a cutter-side partition wall 5 and a cutter head 4, the air chamber 8 defined between the cutter-side partition wall 5 and a main body-side partition wall 6, and the communication port 11 formed at the lower end of the cutter-side partition wall 5 so as to make the cutter chamber 7 and the air chamber 8 communicate with each other. The slurry shield machine 1 functions to lead slurry in the cutter chamber 7 via the communication port 11 to the air chamber 8, and forms a slurry layer 8b in a lower portion of the air chamber 8 and an air layer 8a in an upper portion of the chamber. In the air chamber 8, a water filling pipe 17 for leading diluting water for reducing the density of mud in the slurry layer 8b in the air chamber 8 is connected to a location above the communication port 11.
